Visitors can expect to walk as much a 1-mile on paved paths and are encouraged to bring water. This tour is free. Day of registration can be made at the Visitor Center front desk.</p>

Towpath Talks

<p>Join a Park Ranger for a walk along the historic Blackstone Canal Towpath. Walks last between 45 - 60 minutes. Rangers offer talks on the history of the Blackstone Canal, transportation, and industrial landscapes. Programs might also be on environmental topics such as geology, birding, wildlife, natural landscapes, and pollution.<br /><br />These programs are offered on Saturdays in the months of June, July, August, and September. Walks start in front of the Captain Wilbur Kelly House Transportation Museum at 10:00 A.M. <br /><br />In case of inclement weather, Towpath Talks will be held inside of the Kelly House Barn. The Barn is located about 100 yards down the walking trail past the Kelly House Museum of Transporation.</p>

Consider the experiences of British soldiers who sustained substantial casualties in pursuit of this position. Learn about the early inspiration for a Monument to commemorate this early battle of the American Revolutionary War and the individuals and community effort it took to construct.</p> <h2 class="">2026 Season (May 23 - September 27)</h2> <p class=""><strong class="">Tuesday through Sunday at 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm.</strong></p> <p class="">These talks are typically 15-20 minutes in length. Learn how such ships were built and see how the sailors lived, served, and made sacrifices aboard.</p> <p class="">Visitors will be able to see various parts of the ship on the tour, including: the Combat Information Center, the Plotting Room, Officer's Country (or Berthing Area), Ammunition Handling Room, Officer's Mess, Sailors' Berthing Area, Crew Mess, the Galley, Barber shop, and the Bridge.</p> <h2 class="">2026 Season (May 23 - September 27)</h2> <p class=""><strong class="">Tuesday through Sunday at 11 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm.</strong></p> <p class="">Tours begin on the deck of the ship and last for approximately 45 minutes. Tickets are available for FREE on a first-come, first served basis aboard the ship. Since this tour highlights small spaces, only 12 people are allowed per tour. Visitors must be over 48" in height to safely climb the ladders.</p>

<p>Join us for an Underground Railroad Walking Tour exploring New Bedford’s connection to the Underground Railroad and the individuals who sought new opportunities and freedom in the city.</p> <p>The Underground Railroad was an informal network of people, communities, and transportation routes that assisted individuals escaping slavery. During the 1800s, New Bedford became an important destination because of its maritime economy, employment opportunities connected to the whaling industry, and support networks that included free Black residents, formerly enslaved people, abolitionists, maritime connections, and established community networks.</p> <p>On this tour, discover stories of people who built new lives in New Bedford, contributed to the city’s industries and neighborhoods, and shaped the history of the region. Learn how New Bedford’s role as an international port city connected people, commerce, and ideas during a period of major change in American history.</p> <p>Walk through historic streets. Explore significant places. Discover stories that remain part of New Bedford’s history today.</p>

⌖ New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park · Walking Tours begin at the Visitor Center. A ranger or volunteer will meet visitors either inside the Visitor Center or Outside in the Visitor Center Garden before the tour begins. The main entrance is located at the top of the front steps on William Street. An accessible ramp entrance is available on the right side of the building through the Visitor Center Garden. · Boston
