In May 1539, Conquistador Hernando de Soto’s army of soldiers, hired mercenaries, craftsmen, and clergy made landfall in Tampa Bay. They were met with fierce resistance of indigenous people protecting their homelands. De Soto’s quest for glory and gold would be a four year, four thousand mile odyssey of intrigue, warfare, disease, and discovery that would form the history of the United States.

<p>MOST FRIDAY AND SATURDAYS IN JULY-“TURTLE WATCH” 8:00 PM - Journey with a Park Ranger and visit Canaveral National Seashore to view a loggerhead sea turtle nesting. Turtle Watch Programs give park visitors an opportunity to learn about sea turtles and the role that the National Park Service plays in their conservation. The program will take place in the Playalinda &amp; Apollo Districts on most Fridays &amp; Saturdays July 10,11,17,18,24 &amp;25. The fee for this program is $25 for ages 16 years and older (ages 8 to 15 years is $10). Children must be 8 years old or older to participate. Reservations are required and space is limited. Ship Island Excursions Ferry Service to Ship Island

<p>Join a National Park Service ranger on a one-hour Ship Island Excursions ferry ride to Ship Island where you can have access to ranger-led programs in Fort Massachusetts and a private swim beach. </p> <p>The swim beach is a quarter of a mile walk on a boardwalk from the fishing pier. There is very little shade on the island and no transportation. Food and umbrellas are for purchase at an additional cost on the swim beach. </p> <p>No pets are allowed on the ferry. Fishing is only permitted on the sound side beach.</p>
