This celebration originates in the custom in several countries of marking the summer solstice with bonfires, usually accompanied by traditional dancing. June 24 officially became Quebec’s National Holiday in 1977. Shows and bonfires take place in several municipalities. The Mouvement national des Québécoises et Québécois has been the national coordinator since 1984.
