In 1922, the announcement of the creation of the Institut du radium de Montréal sparked great enthusiasm. The first university research centre in Québec’s history, it symbolized the province’s entry into the great march of Western scientific progress. Radium was then seen as one of those discoveries destined to revolutionize the world of tomorrow. Unfortunately, the Institut’s fate would not live up to those initial promises and, in 1967, it disappeared without drawing attention.
